This year, Forster Square hosted its first Young Readers programme in association with the National Literacy Trust.
Children from three local schools visited the centre over the course of three days. The event is to encourage children to read in their spare time. It has recently been discovered that children who read outside of school have higher literacy skills inside the classroom.
The children particularly enjoyed the sports theme that was arranged, keeping in tone with the event of the moment, the Olympics. The children were taught how to select books that they would enjoy, and were later invited to choose three which they took home for free. On the second day, the Mayor and Mayoress of Bradford also attended the event. Overall, the programme was a great success and we received some really positive feedback from the schools. The more we can do to inspire learning in young locals, the better – keep up the good work, young readers of Bradford!
